Cooling Mattresses

Why Temperature Matters for Sleep

Body temperature naturally drops during sleep. If your mattress traps heat, it can disrupt this process, leading to tossing, turning, and poor-quality rest. A cooling mattress helps maintain a stable temperature for uninterrupted sleep.

Key Cooling Materials

The science of cooling lies in what’s inside the mattress. Here are the standout materials.

Gel-Infused & Bead Foams

These foams are laced with gel or microbeads that actively pull heat away from your body. A cool gel mattress creates a noticeably cooler surface without affecting softness.

Phase Change Materials (PCMs)

PCMs absorb and release heat as needed. They adapt to fluctuations in body temperature, helping your bed stay comfortably neutral — never too hot, never too cold.

Open-Cell Foams & Breathable Coils

Unlike dense traditional foams, open-cell designs create room for airflow. Hybrid models often use pocket coils that further improve ventilation, making them standout cooling mattresses.

Natural Fibers & Cooling Covers (e.g., Tencel, Celliant)

Organic materials like cotton, bamboo, and specialty fabrics such as Tencel wick moisture and allow air to circulate. They're often used in covers for added surface coolness.

Foam vs. Hybrid Cooling Beds

A cooling foam mattress offers contouring comfort and works well for side sleepers, but hybrids bring in coils that improve airflow and responsiveness. Both types come with cooling tech, but hybrids tend to sleep cooler.

Who Needs a Cooling Mattress

If you wake up sweaty, sleep hot by default, share a bed, or live in a humid climate, a cooling mattress can make a significant difference. It’s also helpful if you’re sensitive to temperature changes at night.

How to Choose the Right Cooling Mattress

Picking the right one isn’t just about coolness — it’s about how it all comes together.

Identify Your Primary Cooling Needs

Are you a hot sleeper or just a bit warm at night? The answer helps you decide how much cooling tech you really need.

Assess Mattress Type

Memory foam, latex, hybrid — each type offers a different cooling experience. Hybrids lean cooler, while foams need advanced materials to stay breathable.

Don't Sacrifice Support & Comfort for Coolness

A cool bed isn’t helpful if your back hurts. Make sure your mattress also offers solid support and pressure relief.

Setting Up Your Cooling Mattress

Your mattress won’t do all the work alone.

Choosing Breathable Sheets & Bedding

Look for lightweight bed sheets made of cotton, bamboo, or linen. Synthetic fibers often trap heat and work against your mattress’s cooling tech.

Pairing with a Cooling Pillow

Your head and neck generate heat, too. A ventilated or gel-infused pillows keeps your entire sleep setup cool from top to bottom.

Do I need special sheets with a cooling mattress?

Not necessarily, but breathable, moisture-wicking sheets will help your mattress perform at its best.

Can I add a cooling topper instead of buying a new bed?

Yes, if your current mattress is supportive but too warm, a cooling topper is a budget-friendly upgrade that can help.
